Bad Rothenfelde lies at the foot of the Teutoburg Forest and is a pretty little town.
A spa town with two saltworks. Here you can perfectly combine a leisurely shopping trip with a visit to a restaurant or the Carpe Sol thermal baths. A particular highlight is the Berlin Light Festival, held at the saltworks from autumn to spring.
The local recreation area is on the border between Versmold and Sassenberg. The area is easy to reach by bike. A walk around the lake is also recommended. The Feldmarksee offers a beautiful beach and great restaurants right on the water.
Warendorf's old town captivates visitors with its numerous historic houses and in some places resembles a dollhouse. The market square alone, Warendorf's heart, offers a glimpse of buildings from various eras. Furthermore, the town is known for its state stud farm and is considered the horse capital of North Rhine-Westphalia. The town center entices visitors with its restaurants and many small shops.
On the former castle grounds now stand two separate castles: Ketteler Castle to the east and Korff Castle to the west. The Harkotten double castle complex is a popular destination for day trips. A walk around the entire complex is highly recommended. A particular highlight is the imposing Atlas figure with globe, located approximately 500 meters east of Ketteler Castle.
The most beautiful old town can be found in Münster. A well-known landmark of the city is St. Paul's Cathedral from the 13th century with Gothic and Romanesque elements. The Principal Market is surrounded by gabled houses, the Gothic town hall and the Lamberti Church from the late Middle Ages. The Pablo Picasso Art Museum houses a collection of the painter's lithographs. An impressive weekly market takes place on Cathedral Square on Wednesdays and Saturdays. The city attracts with many shops and plenty of restaurants.
With its numerous shops, the lively city center around Johannisstraße and Große Straße attracts many visitors from the surrounding area. Worth seeing in the old town is the historic market square with cafes and pretty gabled houses as well as St. Mary's Church. Just a few steps away, on the banks of the Hase, is St. Peter's Cathedral. The history of the Peace of Westphalia is particularly interesting here. The outstanding historical event took place in 1648: the Peace of Westphalia, one of the most important peace treaties in European history, was concluded in Osnabrück and neighboring Münster. Osnabrück still bears the nickname “City of Peace” today.
Located on a pass between the northern and southern Teutoburg Forest, lies Bielefeld, the regional center of East Westphalia. The Sparrenburg, one of the main attractions, dates back to the 13th century, as do the Old Town St. Nicholas Church and the New Town St. Mary's Church. In the city you can shop to your heart's content and watch the city's hustle and bustle from one of the cafés on the Old Market.
